As medicines experts, the pharmaceutical workforce plays a key role in improving health outcomes through responsible use of medicines and optimising effective choice and use. The continued development of pharmacy services and the pharmaceutical sciences relies on a well educated, competent, sufficient and well distributed pharmaceutical workforce.
With an escalating global health crisis, and WHO estimate a shortfall of around 18 million health workers by 2030, a national professional CPD becomes an essential ingredient in health workforce construction. Monitoring and supporting national reform and transformation of CPD has become critical for a fully functional healthcare system.
The FIP Workforce Transformation Programme (WTP) is designed to advance pharmaceutical workforces around the world to achieve access to essential health services, safe and effective medicines, and, thus, contribute to universal health coverage.
The FIP WTP is a practical and flexible model, which will: assist countries in assessing their individual pharmacy workforce needs and priorities; support them to develop needs-based workforce strategies and infrastructure; and provide co-created solutions, tools and resources for implementation.
“Investing in the pharmaceutical workforce contributes towards strengthening health systems and achieving universal health coverage by 2030, as outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Our vision is for every country to have a national strategy and action plan for pharmaceutical workforce development,” said Professor Ian Bates, director of FIP’s Workforce Development Hub.
